Last week, clips from private videos began spreading on the internet of Marin, 36, dancing and singing with friends. Some politicians in her home country condemned Marin, calling her behavior inappropriate for a world leader. Some people suggested she may have been under the influence of illegal substances in the videos, but her office on Monday announced she tested negative for drugs.

Women in Finland and Denmark soon began responding to what they felt was the hypocritical and/or sexist outrage over Marin enjoying herself by sharing their own dancing videos. The trend has since spread to social media users in countries from all over the world. Many of the posts contain the hashtag #solidaritywithsanna.

One person who voiced her objections to Marin’s treatment tweeted, “Women can be qualified to lead and know how to have fun. We are in desperate need of more relatable, representative and human leaders #solidaritywithsanna.”

Many of the posts didn’t include any comments with the accompanying video other than the hashtag.

“I’m not Finnish, but I #StandWithSanna. Here’s a pic of my partying with my scientist friends,” said another person on Twitter with an accompanying pic.

Tilly Metz, a Luxembourgish member of the European Parliament, also voiced her support for Marin and posted a video of herself dancing.

“If you have a problem that a female politician is dancing with friends during her week-end, then YOU have a problem, not this politician,” Metz tweeted. “We should even dance more, independently gender or age. [Dancing emojis] = better working afterwards.”

“If letting off steam at a party is the worst thing your prime minister has done, then you’re a pretty lucky country,” wrote Fiona Patten, an Australian politician.

“Women need to support each other and fight double standards,” tweeted a woman in Cleveland.

“More power to Finnish PM @MarinSanna and all women posting #solidaritywithsanna dance videos,” wrote a male supporter. “We need more leaders like her. Leaders who can have fun and are not apologetic about it. Anyone objecting to her partying is just jealous they weren’t invited!”

Other men also joined in on the trend by posting their own dancing videos.

“Dance like nobody’s watching they say. Well, f… it. #solidaritywithsanna Laugh if you want but we males can show solidarity with @MarinSanna as well, right!,” one Twitter user wrote in the caption of his clip.

“We should all dance a little more!” said another person on Twitter, who shared a TikTok video. “I stand in solidarity with Sanna.”

Newsweek reached out to Marin’s office for comment.
