While Fire Emblem has been a staple of Nintendo releases for over three decades, the series has seen a massive boom in international popularity over recent years. 2013’s Fire Emblem Awakening is credited with saving the franchise from cancelation while the most recent release, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, quickly became its best-selling game. Nintendo would officially reveal Fire Emblem Engage as the next game in the franchise earlier this year with a release date set for January 20th. Now, Nintendo’s newest trailer looks to introduce newcomers to the strategy gameplay.

The newest trailer, roughly translated to “First Fire Emblem,” takes a tutorial angle to Fire Emblem Engage, introducing players to the many elements of a Fire Emblem game. The video shows off many of the Fire Emblem franchise’s core elements, introducing newcomers to some of the game’s cast of characters, unit deployment, and turn-based gameplay. The trailer is heavily geared towards teaching new players about the basic progression of a Fire Emblem game, showcasing leveling, equipment customization, and class changes. Players are also introduced to the franchise’s iconic “weapon triangle” combat system.
While Nintendo’s newest glimpse into Fire Emblem Engage was catered to franchise newcomers, the game has placed a heavy emphasis on appealing to longtime fans. The game’s “Emblem” system has seen fan-favorite characters from past Fire Emblem games like Celica and Marth returning to aid players in their battles. The newest game is set to feature the return of several quality-of-life features from Three Houses, including a rewind system similar to that of the previous Fire Emblem. Nintendo has also confirmed paid DLC will follow the release of Engage, bringing back even more beloved characters.
Fire Emblem Engage will come as Nintendo’s headliner release for January 2023, concluding a holiday season that has seen new entries in many of the developer’s biggest properties. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet broke Nintendo sales records following their release, becoming the fastest-selling Nintendo game ever over the first three days of availability. The Fall season also saw the launch of Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope in October, as well as Bayonetta 3 just weeks before Pokemon. Fire Emblem Engage will look to provide Nintendo with a strong start to 2023 when it launches next month.
Fire Emblem Engage will release on January 20th, 2023 for the Nintendo Switch.
