CALL TO THE ‘PEN
The Indians used Cody Allen down three in the seventh inning on Thursday, which is bizarre by any standard. Some possible explanations: Cleveland had already used two relievers that inning who allowed four hits without recording an out, and Allen hadn’t pitched since May 3, so perhaps he was scheduled to pitch at some point in Thursday’s game regardless. Allen issued a walk but escaped without further damage. He’s been pitching better over his past four appearances, allowing just one earned run while striking out five. There’s been no indication that Allen has been removed from the closer’s role, so there’s no need to rush to the waiver wire for Bryan Shaw just yet, but this is still a potentially fluid situation. … Huston Street blew his second straight save opportunity on Thursday, allowing four singles, a walk and three runs to the Astros. Street’s velocity has been down by 1.3 mph on his fastball this year, and his swinging-strike rate has plummeted three percent from last season. There have been no indications that the oft-injured reliever is battling an injury, but it wouldn’t be a bad idea to grab Joe Smith as insurance right now.
WEATHER WATCH
There’s a 55-percent chance of showers in Denver for the Dodgers-Rockies. The Reds-White Sox (51 percent chance of rain), Astros-Angels (32) and Royals-Tigers (26) could also see delays.
