CALL TO THE ‘PEN

Diamondbacks’ manager Chip Hale announced Friday that Addison Reed is out as Arizona’s closer. Hale said the plan is for the move to be temporary while Reed “works out his mechanics” in lower-leverage situations. Hale also said that he’ll play matchups in the ninth inning, but Brad Ziegler is the heavy favorite to get the majority of the save chances. Lefty Oliver Perez is also a candidate for some cheap saves, but with a 6.52/1.86 line on the season, he might do more harm than good to your fantasy team. Ziegler is definitely worth a pickup, and if you’re really scrounging for saves in deep Roto leages, Perez and even Randall Delgado might be worth adds. … Jason Grilli picked up his first save since May 6, tossing a scoreless ninth in Atlanta’s 3-2 win over Miami on Friday. Grilli had allowed at least one run in three of his previous four appearances and missed time due to back spasms recently, so this was a much-needed clean inning. Given Grilli’s age and injury history, he’s not completely out of the woods yet, but only those with deep rosters should bother holding onto Jim Johnson as insurance at this point. … The Dodgers activated Kenley Jansen (foot) on Friday, and he racked up four strikeouts during a scoreless eighth inning. (Yes, you read that correctly.) Yimi Garcia, who blew L.A.’s previous two save situations, was used to get the last out of the seventh. With the Dodgers holding a 6-4 lead, southpaw Adam Liberatore started the ninth inning – likely because Colorado had three lefties due up. After getting a strikeout and allowing two singles, Liberatore was lifted for Juan Nicasio, who struck out the final two hitters en route to the first save of his career. Both Liberatore and Nicasio have been mostly lights-out this year, so L.A. could keep this tandem in the ninth inning until Jansen is deemed ready to close. However, judging by tonight’s performance, Jansen is ready. … In a surprise move, the White Sox used Zach Duke for a four-out save on Friday. David Robertson was touched up for a homer in his last outing on Wednesday, but he’s been one of the most dominant relievers in all of baseball this year, so there’s no reason to think his job is in jeopardy unless he’s nursing an injury. Regardless, Duke got the job done, working around a two-out walk in the ninth inning. It’s worth nothing that Oakland’s first two batters in the ninth were a righty and a switch-hitter who’s stronger against lefties, so if this was a “matchup move,” it didn’t make sense. Robertson didn’t even warm up, so fantasy owners would be wise to grab Duke, as he appears to be the choice over Zach Putnam, who didn’t pitch despite being available, and Jake Petricka, who’s struggled all year and gave up a hit to his lone batter in the eighth inning on Friday.

WEATHER WATCH

It looks like a wet day around the league. The Tigers-Cardinals game in St. Louis is the most likely to get rain (60 percent), but the Giants-Reds (56), Yankees-Royals (51), Angels-Orioles (46), Brewers-Mets (45), Diamondbacks-Phillies (45), Pirates-Cubs (43), Indians-Rangers (40), and Rays-Twins (31) could also be see delays.
