CALL TO THE ‘PEN

Tampa’s Ernesto Frieri earned a four-out save against Miami on Sunday, but he was likely used as closer because Brad Boxberger had pitched each of the previous two games. Frieri allowed two hits and a run, so Boxberger’s job doesn’t appear to be in danger. … Toronto’s Miguel Castro allowed a hit and a walk, but he ultimately protected a three-run lead and nailed down his second save. Brett Cecil tossed a perfect eighth inning in front of Castro, so he’s likely creeping back into contention for saves. … The Dodgers’ Chris Hatcher allowed three hits, a walk and three runs while trying to protect a seven-run lead against the Diamondbacks. Joel Peralta was called on to finish the inning, earning his second save. This was Hatcher’s second straight rocky outing. Expect Peralta to get the next save chance. … LaTroy Hawkins blew his second save of the young season, allowing two hits, a walk and three runs to the Cubs. Adam Ottavino, who pitched the seventh and got the first out of the eighth inning on Sunday, figures to be next in line for save chances, and he’s worth adding right now. … Fernando Rodney imploded in a non-save situation against the A’s, getting tagged for four runs and allowing six total base runners. His job is safe for now, but Danny Farquhar isn’t a bad handcuff if you have room on your roster.
