SPLITS TO KNOW
The Tigers’ Victor Martinez is 13-for-28 (.464) with six doubles and a homer against Francisco Liriano. Unfortunately, the Tigers won’t have the DH in Pittsburgh, so check to see if they squeezed V-Mart into the lineup.
The Phillies’ Ryan Howard and Chase Utley are a combined 7-for-54 (.130) against lefty Jon Niese.
The Rangers’ Adrian Beltre is 6-for-15 (.400) with three homers against Hector Santiago.
The Reds’ Marlon Byrd and Zack Cozart are a combined 6-for-43 (.140) against Travis Wood.
Red-hot Yankees Chase Headley and Stephen Drew are hitting a combined 14-for-36 (.389) with three homers against Bud Norris.
The Rays’ Asdrubal Cabrera is hitting just .205 and slugging .227 in 44 career at-bats against Mark Buehrle.
Cubs catcher Miguel Montero is 7-for-20 (.350) with four homers against Jason Marquis.
Cardinals Matt Carpenter and Matt Holliday are a combined 18-for-42 (.429) with three homers against Wily Peralta.
The Brewers’ Carlos Gomez is just 3-for-19 (.158) with 11 Ks against Lance Lynn, while teammates Aramis Ramirez and Khris Davis are each hitting .083 against the righty. However, Gerardo Parra is 8-for-17 (.471) with two homers, two triples and two doubles against Lynn and could be a deep sleeper.
Another deep sleeper: Ryan Raburn is 14-for-42 (.333) with three homers and five doubles against southpaw John Danks.

CALL TO THE ‘PEN
Tampa called on Kevin Jepsen to protect a one-run lead on Monday, and the veteran turned in a perfect inning for his first save of the season. It’s believed that Brad Boxberger was simply given the night off, but this situation bears watching, as Boxberger only threw 19 pitches the day before. … Toronto brought in presumed closer Miguel Castro in the seventh inning of a tie game against Tampa on Tuesday. He didn’t fare well in his 1.1 innings, surrending two hits, a walk and an unearned run. His usage would seem to indicate that Brett Cecil has regained the closer job after two scoreless appearances since his demotion, but it’s unclear what exactly manager John Gibbons is thinking right now. Castro had done nothing to “lose” the job prior to last night, so this situation remains fluid. … Koji Uehara tossed a perfect inning and struck out two in his season debut, earning a save in the process. He showed no ill effects of his hamstring injury and will remain Boston’s closer going forward. … Colorado’s Rafael Betancourt was used in the eighth inning of a three-run game on Monday, and Adam Ottavino was called on to close out the game in the ninth. Betancourt allowed a hit, a walk and a run, while Ottavino threw a perfect inning with three strikeouts en route to his first save of the season. Ottavino looks like the favorite for saves going forward, but Betancourt is worth keeping around for at least a few more days. … Fernando Rodney majorly struggled for the second straight outing, giving up three hits and two runs during his first blown save of the year. Danny Farquhar is believed to be the “next-in-line”, but he didn’t pitch on Tuesday and was used in the sixth and seventh innings in his last appearances. Yoervis Medina recorded a save for Seattle on Sunday and pitched the seventh and eighth innings on Tuesday. Medina could also be in the mix for saves if Rodney is demoted.
WEATHER WATCH
There’s a 70-percent chance of rain in Atlanta for the Marlins-Braves game, and a 34-percent chance of showers in St. Louis for the Brewers-Cardinals, but other than that it should be a clear day around the league.
