In a report from DSO Gaming, a number of teaser trailers have been uploaded for what is being referred to as the “Duke Nukem Forever Restoration Project.” As the name suggests, it will take the disastrous 2011 Duke Nukem release and reinstate the initial vision, specifically from 2001. They show some of the locales that will be featured, as well as some action sequences, and new music by Lee Jackson, who has been doing the music for the series since Duke 3D.

The build of Duke Nukem Forever 2001 was leaked online a few months ago, with much of its assets supposedly in-place, making the game pretty much playable. Of course, because it’s a game that was being built more than 20 years ago, it’s visually dated. However, that’s unlikely to put off too many fans, especially those who have been yearning to jump back into the boots of the cigar-smoking alien killer. It’s hard to say whether this will suffer the same fate as the official Forever, but many will likely agree that it couldn’t possibly be much worse.
When it released more than a decade ago, Duke Nukem Forever practically derailed the whole franchise. Up until that point, the series was enjoying its moment in the gaming limelight, but this most recent installment has left fans wondering about the future of any potential games. It might not even be a question of when a new one will emerge, but more whether anyone even wants a brand-new entry anymore.
While there is a Duke Nukem movie in the works, helmed by the creators of Cobra Kai, it’s possible that Duke’s time in the gaming world may have come to an end officially. However, the Restoration Project may give hope to some. Sadly, there isn’t a release date for it, but it’s currently looking intriguing, especially for those who are after that dose of retro first-person shooting.
Duke Nukem 3D was released in 1996 for PC, with numerous ports over the years.
